Addictions come in all shapes and sizes. Many times these habits are formed because we are trying to sooth some sort of pain, either emotional or physical. Thus, we do all we can do to cope with them in one fashion or another, whether it is through substance or behavioral addictions. We’re fairly familiar with what may constitute a substance addition, but behavioral additions—gambling, anger, sexual addictions, jealousy, gossiping, media addictions, food addictions, overwork, or any other type of behavior that takes us away from reality—are more complex because they take on so many forms.
We are incredibly blessed in that we have a Savior who gave His life for us so that He can labor for our souls, labor with us to break those deep-rooted cravings for escape from our pain. We fail miserably in breaking our compulsive habits, but we don’t have to live that way.
Jesus once asked a blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51). The blind man replied, “I want to see again.” Boiling it all down, Jesus was asking the man if he wanted to be made well. And today that’s His question for you, friend. You don’t have to live this way. Do you want to be made well? Do you want to look into the recovery resources at the end of this tract? Do you want to stand up again and move toward freedom and peace? Only you can answer that question.
