Today we live in a society where there is more myth than truth about the way in which to have good health. Hundreds of books have been written on how to have good health, stay fit, and enjoy life to its fullest.

Most of these “health” books tout an all-in-one pill. If you take that pill daily, you don’t have to do anything else, including exercise. For example, drug advertisements on cholesterol-lowering medications are interesting. They say, “If diet and exercise are not [enough] in keeping your cholesterol down, then try Zocor, Lipitor, or Crestor.” Disclaimers then accompany the claim because of the various side-effects of the drugs, such as “have your liver enzymes checked frequently.” Why? These drugs could end up killing you!

If drugs could cure every disease, and we had no sick people, would there be a need for medications? Absolutely not! However, we need not concern ourselves with a medication-free society because drugs cannot cure every disease. Furthermore, pharmaceutical companies are not troubled with making you healthy—they are primarily interested in promoting their drugs for a huge profit. It is not in their best interests to have a healthy population.

Take type 2 diabetes for example. It is one of the easiest diseases to conquer by a change in lifestyle, but the ailment annually puts billions of the dollars into the coffers of the drug companies. So why would they be interested in curing type 2 diabetes, or anything else for that matter, when it would put them out of business? Overcoming type 2 diabetes is truly all about a lifestyle change.

We need to bear in mind that when we come down with something as simple as the common cold, that is not always a bad thing. If we don’t have enough common sense to slow the pace of our lives, our bodies will do it for us. Most of us need more rest than we allow ourselves, but too often instead of getting our rest naturally, we look for an over-the-counter quick fix in the form of some medication or drug like caffeine to pump us up and get us going. Still our bodies continue to cry out for help and for rest. If the requirements our bodies needs are not met, they will collapse, regardless of pharmaceuticals.
